General: Situated 400km South of Santiago. This valley has a history of winemaking reaching back to colonial times. The Itata valley has only recently began to produce wine of quality. With most vineyards concentrated mainly in the Central valley of Chile, the Valle Itata has largely been forgotten in the past. However today innovative wineries are trying to revive wine production in this region.

Extensive forest areas alternate with vineyards in the slopes between the Andes and Coast mountain range.

Climate: It rains mainly during the winter months with approximately 1.100 mm per year. Despite being further south, the Itata Valley can often be much hotter than the Maipo Valley just below Santiago. Wide temperature swings during the day, as well as a high quality of sunlight encourages good grape maturation.

Soils: Reddish-brown volcanic sand. The soils in this valley are sandy and rich in minerals, which allow high productivity in the vines.
